MELDORT
Meldort awoke with a start. The night was darker than black ice and the silence thicker that three day old pea soup. The quiet was interrupted by an unexpected harsh rasping and the omnivorous sound of a deep drum. He rolled out of bed and groped his way toward the door, arms outstretched like a blind man, as indeed he was in the blackness. After forty stumbling and hesitant steps, his hands touched the smooth but cold wall. He sidled his way along the wall, to the left. To where he knew the light switch and the door to be. Only they weren’t. Another twenty paces in the dark. Meldort was frightened. This was Meldort knew, impossible, insane for the bedroom was a scant twelve feet square! And no light came through the window. None. There should be at least a feeble glow from the stars, and the moon. His hand groping along along the wall suddenly came in contact with a face. He sprang back in alarm. Who is there? He whispered harshly, straining to see in the utter blackness. The silence mocked him. His mouth was dry and his throat tight with fear but he edged toward the invisible wall again. The malignant darkness was like a living entity. It enfolded Meldort like a caressing shroud....WHAT IS HAPPENING?
The wind without picked up and began to moan malevolently. And then it came. The malefic force.
“Who are you? Where am I? What do you want?”
“I am a servant of the master. You are in his waiting room and I have come to collect your soul.”
Then came a savage hiss. The rasping and the drum ceased. There was a small thud, as Meldork’s head bounced and rolled across the floor. Then a larger one as his lifeless body fell.
